Jericho has two achievements – the lowest city in the world, and the oldest city in the world. Its rich and varied history can be seen today in a trip around the city – the city is dotted with fascinating archaeological sites that tell its story, which began 11,500 years ago and continues to this day. The city is also known as the “Palm City”, and indeed, a visit to the place makes it clear immediately – the date fruit is the king in Jericho. Surrounding the city are extensive orchards, and many trees can be found near the houses. The sweet and healthy produce can be bought in the city’s famous market.
Today Jericho is a colorful and fascinating mixture of old and new, luxurious houses facing a refugee camp, east to west.
What can be found there?
Hisham Palace / Khirbet el-Mefjer – An archaeological site to the north of the city that includes a royal palace, a magnificent bathhouse and a mosque. The site was built in the eighth century CE and a few years after its construction was destroyed by an earthquake. Large parts of it have been preserved and can be seen today at the original site, impressive unique building styles combining Roman traditions, Persian and local construction.
The Qarantal Monastery – a beautiful Greek Orthodox monastery built on the side of a mountain. The pilgrimage to the monastery is accessed by cable car and provides stunning landscape views – desert cliffs including Jericho, a green pearl in the heart of the desert.
Tel Jericho – the remains of biblical Jericho, layers on layers of history thousands of years old. You can see the remains of the walls surrounding the city, the remains of an 8-meter tower and more.
Jericho Market – The famous market is one of the jewels of Jericho – colorful, lively, laden with fresh fruits and vegetables, souvenirs and more. You cannot go through the market without buying from its famous oranges and the giant and sweet bunches of bananas.
The city is surrounded by many tourist attractions – St. George’s Monastery, the Qasr al-Yahud baptismal site, Wadi Kelt and more, and is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful, interesting and unusual places to hike.
